Re: Chapter Four And A Half
At the crossroads, Dwan winces with the loud noise. Looking up he sees the beholder making it's way down the hall.
We don't have much time I'd rather not fight that beast. He says as he ducks away with Custer and Kellar to interact with the mercenaries.
During the interaction he keeps his mouth shut and lets Kellar and Cuss take care of this. Emelious was dicing in the main hall? Well I suppose I was a bit distracted... He thinks.
No time like the present. he chimes in loudly while he momentarily forgot about the beholder.
Shit...
========================================
Dwan lets the others take the lead. His stealth roll was.... bad. 4+0 4

Re: Chapter Four And A Half
The brigand’s mouth opens, and then closes. He looks at Custer, raising his eyebrow. And then, in that Tethyrian accent, he nods at Kellar.
“Thought that it was queer an inner sanctum member wold toss us coin in a dice game for future parlance. Never knew you were part of this, lord Daste.”
The others look at him sidelong, but the Tethyrian man is clearly their superior.
“Right, a distraction. On it. When this mess has sorted, we’ll be looking for our coin.”
He nods at Daste, and then turns to his men. The four of them begin charging down the path where the beholder is floating…
In seconds, you hear them cry out.
“No! No you’ve got it all wrong! They went for the lower library, down the path. I sod’ em with lord Daste - they was running, and I thought it looked off, but…”
Silently, Gimble’s hands extend and the wizened gnome weaves together a perfect tapestry of the sanctum as seen by their enemies. The tapestry hangs in front of the doorway, concealing them from view.
Swiftly, you circle round. Not before Dwan knocks his pack and gear against the stone, causing it to echo and Osvald to curse…but quickly enough that you make your exit…
[…]
It takes you another ten minutes of brisk running through the bowels of the tower before you find yourselves at another elevator. You keep an eye out behind you, waiting for the elite guards and the beholder to float into view. But they don’t.
The elevator door opens to the familiar cold air of the caverns, where the corpses of slain orcs still litter a path down to the portal room…
[…]
You step into the familiar chamber, a cavernous site with a soaring ceiling and a plethora of arc-shaped portals suspended on dais and platforms.
Water pools beneath your feet, as your boots slosh through mud and stone. The air smells of sulphur and burning.
To the west, a tunnel leads out of this place, to where you once liberated the duergar. It seems the orcs have suspended their operations in this wing of the camp, perhaps due to Olufsen and Osvald’s distraction above…or perhaps, the fleeing of the duergar.
Only the sound of water dripping steadily from the ceiling reaches your ears.
[Orbaugh, perception…]
The tiny pseudo dragon chitters on Kellar’s shoulder, as you walk into the chamber. Valeria and Gimble sidle up beside them, the paladin’s boots muddied and soaked.
[[Master…]] whispers Orbaugh, looking down.
[[Your feets…they are wet!]]
This seems more troubling to the pseudo dragon than Kellar would expect.
[[Master…last time we were here, no mud, no water. Now? Sloshing around. Why?]]
Indeed, Orbaugh’s insight does seem troubling. As you peer around the chamber, in fact, you can see that the walls appear to be wet too…
…and upon even closer inspection, they appear to be openly weeping water.
Orbaugh’s chitters guide the entire party to observe this curious phenomenon. Thick, muddy streams of water are leaking from the sturdy rock of the cavern boundaries.
However, to Gimble, this is not a curious affair. The hairs on the gnome’s neck begin to stand up as he recognizes the effects of a spell rather familiar to him.
Transmute rock to mud.
Someone had cast it. And in moments, this entire cavern would be flooded.
============================
Ok guys,
You’re in the portal room. Thank’s to Orbaugh’s keen eyes, and Gimbles knowledge of the arcane, you know that the cavern is melting into mud. You have no idea how long you’ve got, but in moments this cave system could be submerged in thick, viscous, unbreathable muddy water!!!
There are the many portals in this room, of course. And Pimli, in your exploration of this chamber previously, you know that three of them are functional.
I’m going to rule that in your time examining them (before a demon emerged, and captured you), you discerned that one was connected to Imnescar, one was connected to somewhere in the desert of Calimshan, and the last (and largest) was connected to somewhere on the Moonsea…
Now, activating any of the portals will require an Arcana check, supplemented by a WIS-check (or a specific knowledge check, if you’ve got one…)
Pimli and Gimble both know that jumpstarting and attempting to use an unknown, likely unstable portal that could be destroyed by a collapsing chamber in mere moments is a fool’s errand.
So, if you instead plan on leaving through the western passage, Im going to need athletics checks from the whole group, as well as a marching order.
Of course, you could always try and head back the way you came…
…and up the elevator
MVP: Has to be Gimble! Such a great idea with the minor illusion. You really saved the party’s bacon there, given how spectacularly shitty those stealth rolls were.

Re: Chapter Four And A Half
The silted water sloshed against Kellar's boots as he ran into the portal room. Orbaugh frantically chittered to him about the floor. "No, you're right, this is not how it was before... What in hells, the walls. Anyone know what this is?" He looked at Pimli and the others and circled the group a bit. "Do you want to continue or go through one of these things? Pimli, these still working or did they all get deactivated? Damnit, we don't have much time, try and get one of these working, which one puts us NOT here," Kellar asked.
"If we are moving on down the path, we better double time it," he said. "Let's go! Bunch up and get ready to run through a portal or down the hall. And don't trip on anything or you'll be left behind," he commanded.
Actions:
Kellar asked Pimli which portal works? And FFS, use one!
Kellar offered to run down the alternative path if portals aren't on the table for travel.
Stealth Roll= 11+6= 17
Athletics Roll= 1+8= 9
Perception Roll (for how long until the walls collapse)= 9+4= 13

Re: Chapter Four And A Half
We should take the portal to Calimshan. We were going to be heading there next anyway, might as well just save some time and have the crew meet us in Calimport.
==
Dwan votes Calimshan.
If the majority want to go back to imnescar Dwan will follow, but he does not change his opinion on where he thinks the party should go.
(sorry guys I'll try to flush out this post more, but I figured I would get the general message posted so we can discuss if needed

Re: Chapter Four And A Half
Osvald didn't relish the idea of leaping into a mysterious portal, but as his boots sunk deeper into the quickening mud, he very quickly began to warm up to the idea.
"I'm with Dwan, It'll give us a head start--they'll likely assume us dead, and if not, they won't be able to quickly follow with the portals buried. Let's go!"
Osvald starts ushering the group toward the portal, helping to pull legs from the sucking murk, calling for Kellars' strength if need be.
He'll remain to the end to insure all the others make it through.
=====
Osvald agrees: let's get the hell outta dodge. If he sees anyone getting caught in the sinking mud, he'll call it out so everyone can assist one another and no one is left behind in the muck.
Perception to watch out for everyone: 10+5=15
Athletics check for the mud: 14+2=16

Re: Chapter Four And A Half
The descent down the elevator shaft left Cuss's head swimming, and beads of sweat on his face. He did not hesitate then and would not here.
Nodding his head, Cuss once again checks his belt as he moves forward. He pats the dirks, his hand-crossbows, and his pouches. Last, he brushed a finger across the compass in its secured holding place, wrapped in an curious old bag that was among Daste's other items.
[Didn't see anybody else go for the bag of holding...]
As he fell in behind Osvald, the mud sucked at his boots as it had when he first crossed into the Brown Wastes with the man.
He thought again of Olfusen, wishing the elder Hale the lady's good luck in his escape.

Re: Chapter Four And A Half
Gimble watches the walls turning to water and mud. He could already picture in his mind the destruction that would follow once the spell went to completion. "The stone is turning to mud; someone has just cast a spell! The portals are likely unstable and highly dangerous, but if this is the route you wish to take, then so be it. I will provide aid to the young Pimli and help him activate the portal to Calimshan." The gnome arches his neck to search for Pimli and uses his cane to provide support in the difficult to traverse mud. "Lead the way, lad. I'll be right behind you." Gimble begins to follow after Pimli. If he gets stuck in the mud, he will cast prestidigitation to clean off his boots and try to slip out.

Re: Chapter Four And A Half
As the others slowly realize the room is turning to mud and will quickly suffocate them all, Valeria is busy staring in horror for a whole different reason. “Why can’t my armor stay clean for more than five minutes!” She growls, stamping her foot in frustration which does nothing but splash mud up onto her face. “Ugh!” She frantically wipes it away, pouting as it clings to her beautiful red hair.
“Portal sounds great as long as it gets us out of here quickly.” She comments to the others in-between shudders as the mud finds its way down her boots and between her toes. You are a brave warrior who has faced worse things than a bit of mud. Gimble will clean it up once we get out here. She tells herself as the gnomes attempt to get a portal up and working.
